Why do you use Linux ? Print E-mail

We converted to Linux because we simply got fed up with with being forced to throw out perfectly good computers because after 3 years of updates and patches the system software was putting too much demand on their processing power.

We looked around for an alternative operating system and application software and found Linux and open source software (OSS). Having been accustomed to paying many hundreds of dollars for software I was surprised and impressed at the quality and quantity of the OSS. It is every bit as good as the stuff we used to buy and the Open Office applications were able to handle Microsoft Office files so compatibility was not an issue.

That was in 2002 and we are glad we made the transistion. We are still productively using 7 year old machines and our software has cost us nothing but a bit of time reading the instructions.

We now use Linux almost exclusively for graphic design, image manipulation, word processing,  spreadsheets, web site design, programming, e-mail, calenders, to do lists, surfing the web, virutalisation,  web server, mail server, file server etc etc etc.

So not only have we saved $1000's in software and hardware we are still working in the same environment, no need to retrain or upskill anyone (apart from the sysadmin) and we expect that to be true for the forseeable future.

Add to that, that we have not retired a computer for 6 years and don't expect to for several more its been a good environmental choice as well.

And did I mention how secure it is and how stable...............Better stop now Cool
