Open Source Print E-mail

Open source software (OSS ) is used exculsively on our servers. This keeps the cost down without any reduction in performance. There is a preconception held by many that if it is free it can't be any good. In the case of open source this could not be further from the truth.

One of the reasons  OSS is as good as it is has to do with testing. Commercial companies can only afford to donate so much time and money to testing whereas open source is tested daily in the field by thousands of users on a myriad of of hardware configurations. Another reason is that successful OSS is successful because it is satisfying a need. Useful, practical, easy to use solutions are popular and attract more users and so have larger user communities which generates more feedback and sponsorship which promotes further developement and so by a process of 'natural selection' they thrive. So with OSS you are not relying on the claims of some slick marketing campaign but on the choices made by thousands of knowledgeable users.

Here are some of the open source applications used on our servers along with their credentials.

APACHE the web server. Easily the most popular server in the world with over 60% of the worlds servers running it.

SENDMAIL the Mail Transfer Agent. A solid, proven MTA, tricky to configure but very stable.

JOOMLA! the content management system (CMS). This is the package you use to update your website. Another award winning and extremely popular piece of software. There are 1000's of corporate sites around the world running on this package including this one.

Here are some examples.
